What are the reporting requirements for Awardees?

All Awardees must complete an evaluation at the end of the study program, as well as a follow-up report approximately three months later.  Further information on these requirements will be included in the briefing materials to be sent to Awardees by mail.

What is the structure of the study program?

Generally each in-country study program consists of three weeks of intensive language and cultural training including field trips.

What is included as part of an ELTF Award?

Each overseas in-country study program will include costs of international return air travel (economy class), mid-range twin-share accommodation and/or home stays, some meals (as advised in mailout materials), language tuition fees and field trip costs.  The onshore Bahasa Indonesia study program in Darwin will include costs of return domestic air travel (economy class), mid-range twin-share accommodation or equivalent, some meals, language study program fees and field trips.

Domestic travel will also be covered for Awardees who are residing 250km or more from a major (capital city) airport.

Awardees will be responsible for the costs of some meals and tips, their own out-of-pocket expenses such as laundry, telephone and Internet, travel and medical insurance, health checks and inoculations, visa fees and other incidentals (as advised in briefing materials).

Can I choose what places I want to see?

No.  Awardees will be sent a schedule of activities by mail by November 2008.  The ELTF study programs are designed to maximise opportunities for language teachers to improve their language and cultural skills, and group activities are a feature.

Are my travel dates flexible?

Can I vary travel arrangements to spend time with family/friends, or attend another language course?

Due to travel and risk management restrictions, all Awardees in the ELTF Program must travel as part of the group at all times.  Variations to travel arrangements are not possible.

Will I have free time?

Limited free time will be scheduled to allow Awardees to conduct their own curriculum research, purchase resources for classrooms, and take some ‘down time’.  However, it is recommended that Awardees consider carefully how best to utilise their free time, as it is limited.

I have a sister school in the country we are visiting. Can I visit the school?

This may be possible, depending upon how far away the school is.  Visits to sister schools can be made at Awardees’ own arrangement and expense, but can only be made during periods of free time, thus limiting the distance able to be travelled.  Awardees are unable to stay away from the group overnight, and must be present for all set activities.  Also, for safety reasons, Awardees should inform the Group Leader of their arrangements.

I have relatives/friends who will be in the area. Can they visit me during the study program?

Visitors can meet you, providing that their visit does not interfere with any activities scheduled during the study program (i.e., the visit can only occur during free time). Visitors are not permitted to join in group activities or share a room with you.

Can I bring my partner or friend with me at their expense?

Under no circumstances can family members or friends accompany the group.  The ELTF is a professional learning program, and as such, activities are restricted to ELTF Awardees.

My colleague is also participating in the study program. Can we share a room?

Room sharing arrangements are decided upon by the Group Leader, and will be discussed after arrival.  However, Awardees should be prepared to share with someone unfamiliar, and to have sharing arrangements changed during the study program.  This is intended to maximise networking opportunities, and to facilitate group dynamics.

Can I pay a single supplement so that I can have my own room?

Generally, all Awardees will be accommodated on a twin-share basis, and/or homestays where applicable.  Room sharing is intended to maximise Awardees’ networking opportunities, and to facilitate group dynamics.  Moreover, many locations cannot accommodate requests for single rooms when catering for a large group.

I live in a regional area. Will arrangements be made to get me to the nearest capital city airport?

The AEF are able to make travel arrangements for Awardees who live a distance of 250km or more from the nearest major (capital city) airport.

Please note that Awardees in Tasmania should assume that they will fly out via Melbourne (from Hobart), and Awardees in the ACT via Sydney (from Canberra).

I will be staying with family interstate over Christmas and New Year, and would like to depart from a different city. Is this possible?

At the time of applying to the ELTF Program, applicants are requested to nominate their port of departure, usually the capital city of the applicant’s home state.  Due to issues of logistics and seating availability on flights, Awardees will not be able to change their departure port from that shown on their application.

Can I earn frequent flyer points on my airfare?

The AEF cannot assist Awardees with frequent flyer programs.

Will I be catered for if I have special dietary requirements?

Awardees with special dietary requirements should inform the AEF and/or Group Leader at the earliest opportunity, and all reasonable efforts will be made to inform local service providers of your needs.

Bear in mind that it can be difficult to organise special arrangements for every meal, particularly when overseas.  If you are strictly vegetarian or have some other special food requirements, be prepared for the possibility that at times your choices may be limited.

Can an ELTF study program be cancelled?

Although unlikely, an ELTF study program could be cancelled due to a number of reasons, such as a heightened travel warning from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).  The withdrawal or cancellation of a study program is at the discretion of the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations.
